During one of the most severe droughts in recent memory, mandatory restrictions on outdoor water use were implemented in many parts of NSW between 2003 and 2009. This lead to a drop in water use per household from 250L/person/day prior to the drought to 198L/person/day after the drought. Although water use usually bounces back to pre-drought levels after a drought ends, this has not happened.
This outcome is partly because the because the drought was long enough that people formed new water-saving habits. The behaviour change around water use was achieved through the use of a range of social action and community engagement tools. Good water-use habits have been maintained and this could be applied to household preparation for bush fires.
